Most products know more than they can usefully say. My job is deciding what gets said, to whom, and in what order.

I care about what happens after someone looks at a screen. Whether they understood it, whether they acted, and whether they acted well. Most design conversations stop at the first of those. The interesting work is in the other two, which usually means removing things rather than adding them, and being able to say why.

Designers are responsible for product behaviour. What someone does next is decided by what you put in front of them, and in what order.

How I work
first
always
01
What problem, exactly
Most briefs describe a feature. I'd rather know what's going wrong for the person using it, and whether a screen is even the right fix.
research
desk + users
02
Find out, don't assume
Five conversations beat a confident guess. Most of what I've got right came from watching someone struggle with something I thought was obvious.
hierarchy
subtraction
03
Decide what's not on the screen
A screen that shows everything shows nothing. Deciding what to leave out is harder than deciding what to include, and it's most of the job.
handoff
ongoing
04
Build it with engineering, not at them
I'd rather find out something is expensive early than hand over a design that gets quietly simplified later.
after
every time
05
Write down what got cut
The alternatives you killed are the first thing to disappear. They're also the only record of why the thing looks like it does.

Everything here is something I thought deserved a witness.
